Wellington, Motorway Run
A great out and back training paddle.
During a NW wind this can be quite a sheltered spot for up to 14km of paddling on mostly flat water. The start point at Honiana Te Puni Reserve has car parking and toilets. A great spot for getting in some mileage.
A great 9km-10km downwind route in a prevailing NW
This is a fun downwind across Wellington Harbour past Somes/Matiu and Mākaro/Ward Islands concluding past Eastbourne at the Bus Terminal. The start point at Honiana Te Puni Reserve has car parking and toilets.
In a southerly this can also be fun blast. To make the run a little longer, paddle into the weather towards the heads and then turn and run with the weather. Keep an eye out for the Cook Strait Ferries and stay out of their way!
Evans Bay is a great spot to paddle from and good for all levels of paddler. Also home to the Kupe Canoe Club. On a fine day it is lovely to paddle around to the fountain at Oriental Bay, approximately 8km paddle.
In a North to Northwest wind it is a sheltered spot that allows you to experience downwind loops to the level of your comfort.
Wellington, Point Howard to Eastbourne/Burden's Gate
Great for southerly or northerly direction
This is really versatile part of the harbour and a great area to build confidence. Numerous bays serve as exit points if things go wrong and this can be a very sheltered area from easterly winds. It can also be an absolute blast in northerly or southerly winds! For a little extra distance in a southerly push out towards the heads before turning back.
